Hot Air Balloons float freely..

soaring higher and higher for a birds eye view!

On the weekends a regular scene above the giant Saguaros which

grow to more than 40 feet tall.

Hum.. should I put this tour on my bucket list?

Scenic Drive

We've arrived in Arizona

our winter Oasis!

As the passenger on our 5 day road trip I took these photos

*while travelling at a speed of 70 mph.

I share with you glimpses of the scenic drive.

The drive along interstate 40 in New Mexico.

Known as the "Land of Enchantment" because of

scenic colorful landscapes and breathtaking panoramas!

Glorious blue skies!

How wonderful is this after seeing nothing but grey skies

back home.

Snow along the interstate between New Mexico and Arizona

as we head for the Sonoran Desert Foothills which has more than

*300 days of sunshine per year!!

Spectacular Desert landscape!

Steep rocky slopes extremely lush and green this time of year

filled with cacti, desert plants, and winding roads.

Majestic mountains surround us as far as the eye can see!

We are less than 2 hrs. from our final destination!

Saguaro Cactus forest!

The mighty Saguaros with arms that look like they are

waving to us as we pass by!

On The Road Again

The time has finally arrived and we're off on our

annual road trip to sunny Arizona!

Our 2 felines comfy and cozy each in their own travel cages.

We'll drive through 7 states in 5 days arriving at our

destination in Scottsdale. Our next three months will be

filled with hitting the trails, biking, golfing, swimming, and

experiencing richly hued sunsets and warm starlit evenings!

I'll be sharing our experiences with you as we explore

the incredible landscapes, plants and living treasures

of the Sonoran Desert!

Tonight we'll stay overnight in Indianapolis Indiana so I'll

wave to you dear friends!

Wee Lake our own private oasis, a quiet place

shared by the neighbors

only a stone's throw from our house.

Paddled out to the deep end of the lake with

daughter and wee grandson for his

first time ever canoe ride and fishing lesson!

one must venture into the rugged interior by canoe.

The Good Bad and Ugly

Creating color and texture and pathways to enhance
the natural beauty of my woodlands comes with
a NASTY price.

the Bad Poison Ivy

Don't step on or touch this plant!

My woodlands are carpeted with poison ivy, oak,

and poison sumac. Contact with the oil called urushoil
causes itching and painful rashes.

Clearing away the invasive ground cover

to the point of obsession to make way for pathways and

gardens filled in with various favorite plants that can

survive shade under tall Oaks and Savannah Pines.

WARNING..next image not pretty!

the Nasty Ugly

Red streaks where the plant brushed against the skin,

small bumps and finally the worst case as seen above

blisters filled with fluid!

It can take up to a week-15 days after touching the plant for

the rash to appear as it did in my case on my

Legs, feet, arms, fingers, face..

EEK!!

( I was dressed in short sleeves and shorts with much skin exposed!)

I'm sure my violent reaction was due to my immune system

function after having spleen removed during my last cancer journey

Initial treatment consists of washing affected area with

soap and water immediately after contact..

I did NOT..

I'm a city girl what do I know about the carpeted woodlands nasties !!

I was treated at the emergency dept. of hospital.

Infusion of antibiotic for 3 days because infection had set in due

to scratching. An antihistamine and a corticosteroid pill and

ointment was course of treatment for 16 days.

People who are very sensitive...that would be me;

the rash can take up to 6 wks. to heal!!

I am still itchy in areas that came in contact with poison ivy
and it's 2 months later!!

This discomfort and hard lesson learned is well worth it
seeing the garden transform into

a comforting sanctuary where I can go to think and dream ..

creating a garden for my soul!

It has occurred to me that an entire month has

passed since I last posted!

Last year I embarked on a quest and launched my own business and

because I escape to Arizona all winter, I have been making up for lost time.

At the end of my busy day there just doesn't seem be the time or the

creativity required for blogging!

Oh I know it's a question of priorities in one's daily tasks

but I'm finding I just don't have the creative juices flowing and the longer

I'm away from blogging the harder it seems to get back!

I sure hope you all understand.

I know that several of you have emailed me asking how I am and for that

dear friends I am deeply grateful.

I have been back and forth to the city for routine post cancer

checkups and all is well with me. I am healthy and fully recovered!

These visits are par for the course when one is in remission.

I appreciate your comments and your patience in continuing to

my inspiration came from Mother Nature

She has the ability to combine colors in the most brilliant way

Yesterday it was the lemon yellow finch and today

it's the bright orange of the Baltimore Oriole

just look at the marmalade coloring of this feral cat..

I know he's impressed with the bright orange Oriole

Feral cats continue to roam about my woodlands

action to capture and spayed is the solution but there's

no organization in place ... what am I to do

Painted Desert Part II

Colorful Chinle formations spreading across The Painted Desert

with the purest air quality.

As in many rural western areas, sulfates, organic matter, soot

nitrates, and soil dust from industry farming contribute almost equally

to decreased visibility. As does motor vehicles, forest fires and other sources.

We can help improve air quality through car pooling, recycling,

reducing use of electricity and becoming involved in community

air quality issues.

Previous post I shared images of the Petrified Forest in Arizona.

We stepped into what is know as the "Crystal Forest" and entered

a mysterious world of ancient trees turned to stone!

The forces of Nature created a place that holds beauty beyond description.

The brilliant colored remnants of an earlier geologic age invite you to visualize a changing world. The processes that created petrified wood here ceased millions of years ago.

This is Jurassic Park where dinosaurs roamed and for geologists a haven for discovering fossil remains. Black basalt that flowed from a volcano that erupted here caps the cliff. Below this layer a horizontal line cuts across the face of the mesa and separates rock of two different geologic periods. The pink mud stone below this line was deposited about 225 million years ago! The brown mud stone and basalt layers above the line deposited only 5-8 millions of years ago.

Petrified wood and other fossils are irreplaceable resources to be cherished undisturbed. Thoughtless visitors have removed most of the crystal that gave Crystal Forest its name.

The Painted Desert

Many who follow my blog regularly, know that hubby and I

spend our Canadian winters in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona.

We drive the 5 day trip and during our drive back home

last week we stopped by the Petrified Forest

Today I share a few sky views of our visit.

*NEXT POST I will post more photos of this unique place

Pintado Point in the Petrified Forest National Park AZ

Vistas of remarkable clarity extend far beyond park boundaries

because the air quality in and surrounding the Petrified Forest is

among the purest in the continental United States.

Long distance visibility also allows you to see the Painted Desert's

vibrant colors extending out to the horizon.

Littered with broken segments of petrified trees.

A mysterious world of ancient trees turned to stone.

Approximately 225 million years ago during the

Triassic period a floodplain existed here..

littered with fallen trees periodic flooding buried the logs

beneath layers of silt.

Over time silica-laden waters filtered through these

deposits and petrified the wood by encasing the trees'

organic material with minerals.

It was quite fascinating and worth the time taken to see

such prehistoric treasures!

We've arrived back home to see that Spring is in motion..

"where's the water!" The river has thawed..

a welcome location for breeding and feeding and photo opportunities I do miss the warmth of desert temperatures in Arizona. Today temp. in my world is 9C... Brrr I'm frozen feel the cold deep into my bones.. my body needs to adjust from AZ temps of +90F

Baby Face

A few days before leaving Arizona I went for my last

bike ride passing by a horse stable and there she was!

I snapped off a few photos but she was so nervous I didn't want

to spook her. I did go back the next day and there were

2 more newborn fouls!!

I took more photos but for now I'm recharging my batteries.

We've arrived in the state of Indiana and it's 7 degrees C.
Brrrr!

Tomorrow we arrive home. I sure hope it warms up!

Prickly Pear

Before I left Arizona the cactus species were beginning to blossom. It is the Prickly Pear that has the showiest bright pink blossoms that stops you in your track! So delicate and paper like this flower on such a prickly host.

enlarge this image and take in the beauty! The hedge hog cactus in it's natural habitat. You can imagine how colorful the desert becomes when all the cacti are in bloom..mid April to May.

It was tempting for us to stay longer but

our woodland home is waiting for our return.

We drove through New Mexico and stopped off at the Petrified Forest and saw prehistoric treasures which I'll post tomorrow. We are presently in Texas where Spring is beginning to show is blossoms! Trees are leafing out and I saw my first lilac bush this year!

We are on route to Joplin Missouri.

Tomorrow we begin the 5 day road trip back home

With the warmer season approaching I think it's time

to explore our woodlands surrounded by Lake and streams.

I do hope that Spring is waiting for me upon arrival!

Hedgehog Cactus

Hidden secrets..meticulous detail..elaborate composition.

When exposed to the rays of the sun the Hedgehog Cactus blooms almost overnight.. and transforms into a beautiful flower.. a glorious riot of bright fushia color crowning the Hedgehog Cactis!

In previous post an orange flower but it is this bright vibrant pink that takes my breath away!

Pinnacle Peak

I introduced you to this prominent N. Scottsdale landmark

in February when I posted here.

Since then we've hiked the 3 1/2 mile trail twice!

At first glance you may see just a pile of rocks but with a closer

look one realizes the amount of life this desert landscape offers.

Described as a moderate hike with miles of graded trails

winding its way up and around the mountain.

I found it to be a challenge climbing up the slopes

having arthritis in knee and hip.
Was I nuts hiking this trail not once but twice!!

Although a gradual ascent every step upward a struggle..

natureboy are we there yet!!

The highest point 2889 ft. and then the trail drops down

the west side of the mountain.
After reaching the end you then turn around and

go back the way you came!

A few times I didn't think I'd make it..

I gulp down my pure coconut water
known to rejuvenate and balance body PH.

I catch my breath,rest and enjoy taking photos

of the panoramic view.

As we climb the slopes there is an ever changing view the

higher we go. I scope out the luxury real estate below and one

of the nearly 200 area golf courses in and around Scottsdale

using my zoom lens.

WE continue along the trail and I keep a watchful eye for desert

inhabitants...

snakes and lizards now come out from winter hibernation.

I know that my friend Lisa is freaking out reading this!

I feel rewarded in seeing the lizard below coming out to

bask in the sunshine!

A feeling of accomplishment comes over me..I conquered yet

another mountain hike!

Spring has come to the desert and I have one more hike planned

before we head back home to Canada next week!

Whaaaa! I'm not ready to leave yet!!

Can you believe that here in the desert we spent

a day at the beach!

Bartlett Lake

A 40 minute drive from Cave Creek, our winter home

through a natural desert terrain in the heart

of the Tonto Forest

we spend a day enjoying the Lake!

Surrounded by indigenous desert plants and fed by

the pristine waters of the Verde River a perfect

refuge from the desert heat.

With temperature of 90 degrees last week todays overcast

sky was a welcome break.

Scenic Bartlett Lake offers recreation
of boating, fishing, and overnight camping. I'm sure that
during the summertime this beach is quite busy.
This particular day hubby, son and grandson went fishing.

Grandaughter and I enjoy the peace and solitude
sitting on rocks surrounded by sloping beaches.

Last week I introduced you to this unforgettable Jewel.

Smack in the middle of desert terrain

~ a quiet stream~

winds peacefully through.

I lag behind taking photos admiring the grasses, rocks and

various plants, creek side as my friends continue upstream.

Two ladies from the hundreds who showered me with caring words

encouragement and prayers

during my struggle last year with my latest cancer journey.

Desert Jewel

Exploring in the Desert continues to offer miles

of hiking trails, wilderness and solitude without having to

venture far from civilization!

My passion for Nature leads me to a desert oasis..

Tonto National forest at the edge of the town of Cave Creek.

A magical forest!

Giant Saguaro cactus and Cottonwood trees..

a protected nature preserve called

"the Jewel of the Desert"

a sparkling stream

certainly the crown jewel!

A lush area along a river bank with
Mesquite and beautiful Cottonwood trees!
With the sound of trickling water I cross over the
makeshift bridge excited knowing that today
great photo opportunities will arise naturally as I enjoy and
observe the water and the many botanical resources it provides!
Am I really in the desert!!

With arms up the giant Saguaro waves so I follow
the Nature Trail
anxious to discover more jewels of this desert!
I'll stand here and wait for you as you cross over..
look what's ahead!

I am told by other hikers that this
Cottonwood tree looks glorious in early January
when it shows off its golden color
before it's leaves drop.
note to self: ..return here next January to see the golden jewel color!

With my zoom lens I certainly was ready for this opportunity

to photograph the above

Javelina!
It is early morning and quite an exciting event for natureboy

and I to see the Javelina family right in our green space!

I snapped off a few shots without getting too close as it was

several females with their young.

Javelina form herds and rely on each other to defend territory

and protect against predators.

They are known to charge if too close to their young!

They eat primarily plants including cacti, succulents, and bulbs so

the residential gardens are a perfect place for grazing.

The Javelina moves around mostly at night so

to see this family grazing in the green space during daylight

just a few houses from ours was truly a memorable moment!

Note: locals don't care for the damage these animals do to their

desert gardens..they have no use for them coming around.

We felt blessed in having the opportunity to witness this moment!

Pinnacle Peak

a prominent N. Scottsdale AZ landmark..

a wonderful place to view sunsets!

Large granite boulders make up the mountain..

highest point 2889 feet.

I look forward to hiking the 3 1/2 mile round trip hiking trail next week

because the desert wildflowers are beginning to bloom!

This evening I'm enjoying live music under the stars western style

at a rustic outdoor bar called Greasewood Flats with picnic tables,

a warm toasty campfire and

a perfect view of this magic hour at sun set!

In my previous post related to Sedona I did not feel that

you could see

Our adventures in Arizona continues to be

We had a visitor from Canada last week and we

toured around sightseeing & showing her the rugged beauty

of the Sonoran Desert and places of interest surrounding Scottsdale.

I delight in playing hide and seek with this little one..

As I hike the various trails I've noticed that there are

very few resident desert creatures

I learn that most hibernate..

head underground in November for protection from the

elements and predators and then resume normal

activities in April.
I am pleased that this little one decided

to amuse me.

A rigorous hike

once at the top offers us a panoramic view!

in Cave Creek 10 miles outside Scottsdale Arizona
Black Mountain a difficult hike on a primitive trail

with an elevation gain of over 2500 feet.

We head for the trail which takes us up the right side.

Trails are steep and well marked but involve

strenuous hiking straight uphill..

Endless blue sky, hovering clouds, sun shining brightly

amazing views in every direction inspire us to continue

to reach the top..

to reach the Saguaro cactus!

Since chemo last year I experience permanent

numbness in both both feet and still healing from a

ankle fractured a few years ago.

With proper footwear with each step I am able to feel

confident and comfortable stepping over the rocky terrain.

With silent awe I look out at the majestic view of

the Sonoran Preserve.

Blue sky as far as I can see and no clouds hovering

over us..

I smile.. another day in Paradise!

Hiking Scottsdale's preserves is a spectacular way to

stay in shape enjoying the blue skies and at the same

time exploring the most diverse desert plant life

as we discover the many winding trails!

We pose between two giants..I feel privileged to be in their space.

Arizona's icon the Saguaro cactus..hundreds of years old!

Today we hike with good friends .. who also escape

from the snowstorms back home in Canada.

Temps here this January average record breaking mid 70's every day!

Many miles of trails and all are well marked.

Some trails can be rigorous which involves strenuous hiking

through steep terrain and and also some quite shorter

but one thing is important

the desert air pulls the moisture out of you rapidly

so we come prepared with lots of water and treats.

Today was a good hike with a surprise along the way

a horse and rider!

Basics we have with us on every hike!

OK now we are ready for the strenuous hike down the mountain.

I baked those cheese biscuits before heading out!

I always find it harder hiking down the steep trails.

We rest tomorrow and hike another trail on Sunday!

Welcome to a place I now call home.

Natureboy and I return to Arizona not only to escape the

long harsh winters in Canada but to experience

the heart of the desert charm.

A New Year begins!

Welcome friends and followers..

wishing you a healthy happy and peaceful New Year!

I begin my New Year discovering once again

the spirit of the southwest!

Scenic mountain landscapes, unspoiled natural desert,

and always the magnificent mighty Saguaro Cactus

appears on the horizon!

After spending Christmas with our son and his family,

we've settled into the valley of the sun, Scottsdale AZ

our home for the next 3 months!

Our fur babies have adjusted and are exploring every

nook and closet.

We look forward to engaging in the southwest life!

BTW : last week snow fell for about 15 minutes..

It was hilarious watching the locals take pictures of snow

that resembled Styrofoam balls.

diet is seeds and plant material!

Hello they have come to the right place as I give away

seeds and peanuts and corn for visitors from

the Nature world daily!

Feral Cats

Wild and free and homeless they romp and stalk and roam

about my woodlands.

Pussycats pussycats what shall I do..

I cannot take you in even though you are the Purrfect pair!

Oh my how the black one resembles my Babie!!

I cannot believe this...me the ultimate animal lover..

here in my own backwoods I have several Feral cats!!

Do I feed them. Do I capture them and take them to a shelter.

They must be spayed or neutered to prevent a colony of orphans.

Winter is approaching and I snowbird to Arizona!

As I wander and ponder in my woodland garden, I realize that

dreams do come true!

I have always wanted to have a home tucked in the woodlands

pinch me .. I'm here!

We moved in a week ago and are 90% settled in!

I am sorry dear friends for being absent from blogging for so long!

Escaping city dwelling as a nature lover I have a

special awareness & appreciation of the beauty of nature!

I embrace the new possibilities in my
new home and surroundings!

Art and nature create a dialogue
in my woodland garden..

Tucked under a pine tree she'll be protected

from winter's chill yet to come.

Crisp cool days of Autumn offer me a welcome walk

through my woodland garden. The leaves changing color

cast a warm glow!

I now enjoy various scenic spots along the many trails

in my own backyard!

my very own Monet's lily pond..

the lilies have gone and the

Canada Geese have settled in!

Intimate Autumn

Summer Past

Buckets filled with beach sand

With a nip in the air summer has passed and now the days run
short with the season of autumn turning yellow.
I can't believe I have been absent from blogging for so long!
I have immersed myself in launching my jewellery business
and packing for the move taking place in a few short weeks!
I've had little free leisure time to kick back and
allow my creative juices to flow necessary to update my blog!
I apologize to many of you who have been worried about me!
All is good here!
Thank you for caring and continuing to visit my blog!
My business launch has been successful and I manage to take
time to ride my bike every day through quiet wooded paths
embracing the sights that surround me.
Fields of Sunflowers, meadows filled with Queen Anne's Lace,
Nature's wee visitor to my garden, the Water Hyacinth so beautiful
shading the water's surface of my pond! All memories of my nature
world forever preserved in my mind.

Soon I will reside near a beach location
where I shall learn how the shore sounds in the wind
and listen to the lazy slap of small waves perhaps a few BIG
ones too!
I will take time to fill buckets with beach sand allowing
Joy Pleasure and Serenity to fill my busy life!

Home Sweet Home

~Home is where your story begins~

We have signed the legal papers so I am able to reveal

our new home

the place where the next chapter of our lives begin !

Natureboy and I shall be moving into our

home sweet home

in mid October just in time for my birthday!

With an existing canopy of trees surrounding our

new home Mother Nature created

a woodland garden for me!

Ferns and Queen Anne's Lace grow in layers through

the filtering light! Perhaps I'll throw out a packet

of wildflowers seeds to add to the enchantment!

Our private lake ..

~Wee Lake~

only a 3 minute walk from the house to provide us with

an instant connection with Nature.

A quiet spot for time out to reflect, to read, to swim,

and enjoy the reflective qualities of the water which is just

one part of it's relaxing charm!

This past weekend I walked the lake area

and followed a path behind the trees
not realizing that I was on

a path of discovery!

A river runs behind Wee Lake filled with a profusion of

hundreds of water lilies !!

I have discovered my very own sanctuary like

the famous pond of Claude Monet!

The famous pond of Monet had a small humped bridge

and 2 boats moored at it's edge where he did several paintings.

My river of waters lilies has a dock that I'm sure will provide me

with many creative photo opportunities!

journey I was on last year fighting cancer and today

live the life that was waiting for me..

The demands of selling our home is behind us and now

I am able to enjoy the summer relaxed and at ease

in my peaceful garden!

It brings me great Joy knowing that the family who

purchased our home appreciates the time invested in creating

my "special place"

now overflowing with starburst flower heads.

The lady who will move into our house is a gardener!

Soothing colors, soft pastels the core of my peaceful garden..

yes I'm sure it will be a pleasure for her to work in as

well as to view.

Our new home in the woods I will learn all about

a peaceful woodland garden!

new beginning!

I visualized hubby and I one day living in a house

surrounded by woodland at the same time living

near water ..a must for us to be near water.

Our present home has SOLD and we have purchased

the above new house located in the beach community of

Grand Bend!

The previous photo is a lake we are now part owners of!

How about that our own private wee lake to enjoy

at the same time

having the beaches of Lake Huron only a 15 minute walk away!

My dear frog prince and I leap forward to

~follow our dream~

to live in a house in the woods.. to have

many serene moments walking along the shore listening

to the waves..

the stars are lined up in our favor..

I give thanks to both God and to the Universe!

Lake and Woodland

coral and white fungi shaped like a rose!

In my world glimpses of crystalline lakes are never

far from view.

Over the holiday weekend we explored and

enjoyed the quiet side of life..

the flow of waves along the shore,

watching sunfish below the surface, and quiet strolls in

the woods discovering unexpected treasures.

I picked a single pink fragrant peony and floated it

in the bird bath..

elegant roses are blossoming at the same time!

Heritage "Ausblush"

My first David Austin rose..invites me to get as close as I can

close my eyes and inhale its delicate fragrance
mmmmm!

A delicate Shell pink rose with cupped blooms
and when fully open layers of petals resemble

a fine Lady's crinoline!

Lavender and Roses

blooming at the same time their sweet fragrance lingers in the air

a delight to my senses..this is where I go to think to dream ..

my garden..my sanctuary.
It is a wonderful garden season with peonies,roses,lavender

and now the hydrangeas all blooming at the same time!!

Watering Cans and Cats

A quiet place nestled in the

Dwarf Maiden Grass "Little Kitten"

gives Paisley an ideal spot for a catnap.

Picking Cherries

Summers bounty
One of the pleasures in our garden is watching ((two))
BING CHERRY TREES
grow from bud to blossom to luscious clusters
of fruit

One small bowl of cherries
picked before they are fully ripe
Bing Cherries should be a darker color..
Why so few cherries you ask from 2 trees?

bandits are flying around having a bountiful feast

blue jays,blackbirds, robins & the four legged kind..

squirrels and raccoons

selfishly ate *all the cherries
and left quite the mess on the ground!

I can say selfish because we spend a fortune providing

peanuts and birdseed for them!!!
I managed to pick one small bowl before they were ripe.

Summers bounty dropped about little chipmunks head
and happily he eats up all the wasted cherries fallen
to the ground.
It is so frustrating for us to see the cherry trees raided by
the visiting birds and small wildlife. Natureboy has placed
netting around one year but it's more trouble than it's worth as
the birds manage to pick through it. We've thought of
removing these trees but I just can't cut down a tree
unless it's diseased...
so picking cherries results in one small bowl.
